We try and get back to everyone who comes our way, but here are our six tips to help you quickly identify and approach the right custom builder for you, start the conversation, and ultimately get you into your custom home ASAP.
1. Know the difference between a custom builder and a project builder. Custom builders work with custom-designed plans – either drawn by a building designer, or architect. You won’t be able to see these plans on a builder’s website – as they are unique and designed to the family’s living and home maintenance requirements, and all of the features and elements of that particular block.
2. Drive around the Brisbane suburb you’ve bought in – what builders are currently building there, and are active? Does the construction site look tidy and organised? The latter is a good litmus test for quality.
3. Visit the Master Builders Queensland website to do a ‘Find a Builder’ search – you can see who builds in your suburb by searching by suburb name or by postcode and by type of building work. This matters a lot. Some builders, like us, have small teams, and therefore work in certain areas only, due to mobility of staff.
4. Do a Google search, and check out the Google Reviews of each builder (filter the reviews by ‘most recent’), and check out their website. Look at the varied styles of completed homes they’ve built – also take note of the size, scale and type of home. Some custom builders specialise in small lots, others on acreage, others in townhomes, some on sloping blocks.
5. Drop a note in the letterbox of a home you admire, and ask the owners if they wouldn’t mind sharing the details of who built (and designed) their home – people typically feel very proud and flattered to be approached.
6. Ask friends whose homes you admire who their custom builder (and designer) was, and whether they’d recommend them.
